UK food shortage

Tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumbers and several other vegetables are being rationed across the United Kingdom along with some fruit in some stores. Who or what is to blame for this crisis?

Well, depending on who one asks, the answer can range from the cold weather in Spain, to increased production costs to bureaucratic red tape, as well as high energy costs, thus less production in green houses.

Whichever the answer, the reality is that for now attaining these vegetables will be more difficult.

But the bigger question is this just a one-time crisis or is it a sign of increased food insecurity, especially as the Ukraine-Russian war continues and affects both the energy and agricultural sectors.

To shed more light on the issue, Spotlight has interviewed Steve Keen, economist and author in London, and Mick Napier, activist and commentator in Edinburgh.
