American citizen died recently in Ukraine: State Department

This photo purportedly shows the passport of a US citizen, who was fighting alongside Kiev's forces against Russians and was recently killed in Ukraine.

A US State Department official has confirmed media reports that an American recently died in Ukraine. According to some reports, the man was killed while fighting for Ukrainian forces against Russia.

The US embassy in Ukraine had urged Americans on Tuesday to leave the conflict-stricken country as soon as possible.

The embassy in Kiev cited US intelligence sources as claiming that the Russian forces were planning to launch offensives in the week marking Ukraine's Independence Day.

"We also once again reiterate US citizens should not travel to Ukraine due to the active armed conflict and the singling out of US citizens in Ukraine by Russian government security officials, and that US citizens in Ukraine should depart immediately if it is safe to do so using any commercial or other privately available ground transportation options," the US State Department spokesperson said on Friday.

The spokesperson added that embassy officials were in touch with the family of the deceased and were providing consular assistance to them.

US officials cited by media sources have said they could not provide any further information about the American who died, out of respect for the privacy of the family.

Newsweek first reported the death of the US national amid the Ukraine conflict, citing a Russian official who announced online that an American fighter alongside Kiev's forces had been killed fighting Russian troops.

Governor of Primorsky Krai, Oleg Kozhemyako, said members of the "Tiger" military unit from his area had killed the American during a battle.

"American mercenary was destroyed in Ukraine," Kozhemyako said in a Friday post on his channel on the Telegram messaging app. The post was accompanied by photos of both a US passport and Ukrainian state-issued ID identifying the purported American casualty.

Kozhemyako said the US fighter, whose identity has not been revealed by family members or US officials yet, was killed "in the first clash literally immediately after arriving at the front line."
