The administration of US President Joe Biden has been discouraging Americans from going to Ukraine for a fight against the Russian forces, despite Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s request.
“Ukrainians have shown their courage and they are calling on every resource and lever they have to defend themselves. We applaud their bravery, however, our travel advisory remains, US citizens should not travel to Ukraine,” the White House deputy press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters on Wednesday.
The US State Department issued a “Level 4: Do Not Travel” advisory on Thursday, asking the US citizens in Ukraine to immediately leave the country due to an imminent armed conflict.
The comments by Jean-Pierre come after Zelensky urged all “citizens of the world” on Sunday to go to Ukraine and join the fight against Russia.
He also lifted the visa requirements for the foreign volunteers to facilitate their entry into the country.
However, unlike the US administration, the British government has expressed its support for the citizens who intend to go to Ukraine.
According to a report by Sky News, hundreds of British volunteers have already arrived in Ukraine and many others are expected to travel to the country in the coming days.
Meanwhile, the EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has announced that the bloc would provide $500 million in lethal and non-lethal aid to Ukraine while closing its airspace to Russia.
Germany and other European countries have also announced that they would speed weapons and other military assistance to help Ukraine.
The Russian offensive against Ukraine has now entered its seventh day, with fighting intensifying in the capital Kiev and in other big cities. The “special operation” in Ukraine was to demilitarize and “de-Nazify” the country, a justification dismissed by Kiev and the West as propaganda.
