Heavily armed members of a group that calls itself Moorish American Arms have had a face-off with US police, who forced some to escape into the woods before getting arrested like others.

Nearly a dozen armed men were captured after a standoff with police in the middle of a major highway in Wakefield, Massachusetts, multiple reports said.

Dressed in military-style uniforms, the armed members were accidentally visited by a state trooper, while they were refusing on the side of the road.

The Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council in Wakefield, a Boston suburb, initially arrested two of them  while the rest absconded.

"We're trying to successfully and peacefully resolve this," Col. Christopher Mason said.

Massachusetts state police said in an update later that "7 additional suspects were being transported for booking."

"Two additional suspects were located in their vehicles, bringing the total number of those arrested to 11 (two initially on North Avenue and nine outside and inside the vehicles)."

The law enforcement recovered myriad arms from the group, whose motive remained unclear, including two AR-15 semi-automatic rifles, a shotgun and a short-barrel rifle.
