Iran’s presidential elections

Iranians have taken to the polls and elected Ebrahim Raisi to be their next president.

The principalist and Head of the Judiciary won in a landslide victory of 62%, racking up 18 of the 28 million ballots cast. With turnout at a historic low of 49%, the results were immediately shunned by Western governments and media alike who sought to subvert the elections in their usual manner, as with Syria, Bolivia, and Venezuela.

The election comes at a sensitive time as talks in Vienna are underway to revive the nuclear deal which the US left in 2018, and Iranians battle with the global coronavirus pandemic, worsened by Western sanctions.
