The Afghan government has imposed a two-week lockdown on nearly half of the educational centers and universities across the country as part of efforts to cope with the third wave of COVID-19 in Afghanistan.

According to Afghanistan’s public health ministry, the third wave of COVID-19 is sharply spreading across the country and the government is bracing for the plight.

As officials say, the government’s decision to put a two-week ban on nearly half of the educational centers and universities is considered a precautionary measure to avoid further spread of the disease in the country. The public health ministry has also urged locals not to violate health protocols.

However, locals believe that attempts like this must be associated with other supportive measures by the government in order to convince ordinary people to stay at home.

In the meantime, some others suggest that closure of educational centers and universities is not enough and that the government must put a ban on activities of all public sites such swimming pools, wedding halls, sports clubs and even religious sites.

As observers say, the Afghan government will have a tough task to confront the spread of the 3rd wave of COVID-19 pandemic due to shortage of medical equipment. This comes despite receiving millions of dollars in aid by regional and international states and bodies.

Based on official figures, over 70,000 Afghans individuals have been affected by the disease so far and some 3,000 others have also lost their lives over the past year.
