Tehran calls for Berlin cooperation in investigating role of German citizens in anti-Iran sanctions: Rights official

The secretary of the Iranian Judiciary’s High Council for Human Rights has urged Germany to cooperate with Iran to look into the role of German individuals in imposing sanctions on the Islamic Republic and examine the situation of Iranian prisoners held in the European country.

In a Saturday meeting with Germany's Ambassador to Tehran Hans-Udo Muzel, Ali Baqeri Kani called on the German government to cooperate with the special representative of the country's High Council for Human Rights to investigate the situation of Iranian prisoners held in Germany.

Baqeri Kani, who is also Iran’s deputy judiciary chief for international and human rights affairs, asked for Berlin’s cooperation to investigate the role of German natural and legal persons in the imposition and implementation of cruel sanctions against the Iranian nation, especially those related to humanitarian issues such as medicines, medical equipment and foodstuff.

Commenting on Iran’s plans as a new member of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), the official emphasized that international human rights bodies should put on their agenda “restoration of the rights of Palestinian, Yemeni, Iraqi and Syrian women and girls who have been abused by the occupiers, aggressors and terrorists.”

The official outlined damages inflicted on the Iranian nation through cruel the sanctions imposed by the United States and implemented by certain European countries and said upholding the rights of Iranian women and girls, which have been violated as a result of US and Europe brutal sanctions, is an important mission of Iran as the new CSW member.

Last month, Iran’s mission to the European Union called on Amnesty International to compile a report about the harmful impacts of illegal American sanctions on the livelihoods of Iranians, especially at a time when the country is grappling with the global deadly coronavirus outbreak.

Iran’s Embassy in Belgium -- which hosts the EU’s headquarters -- drew attention to the difficulties that over 80 million Iranians have been facing under America’s unilateral sanctions, saying those problems have been compounded by the spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus.

Since May 2018, when Washington left a multilateral nuclear deal with Tehran, the Iranian nation has been the target of an American “maximum pressure” campaign, which is primarily devised to cripple Iran’s energy sector and its transactions with international banks.

The US claims the humanitarian goods are exempt from its sanctions, but the restrictive measures have scared foreign banks and companies away from engaging in any trade with Iran, something that prevents Tehran from using its financial resources to buy basic needs, such as food, medicine, and medical supplies, from abroad.

In October 2018, the International Court of Justice — also known as the World Court — ruled that the US must lift the sanctions targeting Iran’s imports of humanitarian goods such as food and medicine.

That ruling, however, fell on deaf ears.
