Clinic gives elderly woman empty shot of COVID-19 vaccine

A Colombian nurse injected an elderly woman with an empty syringe at a Colombian COVID-19 vaccine clinic on Thursday.

Celina Bautista de Alvarado travelled to get her COVID jab at a local clinic in Floridablanca in the Colombian northern department of Santander on Thursday, accompanied by her granddaughter Dayana Hernandez Alvarado who filmed the long-awaited moment with her mobile phone.

Upon reviewing the footage, while still at the clinic, Dayana noticed the nurse had pricked her grandmother with an empty syringe. When Dayana challenged the nurse, the nurse claimed that liquid had 'spilled out' from the syringe.

''When the time came to vaccinate my grandmother, the person in charge, approached us and injected by grandmother with an empty syringe. I hadn't realized initially. I thought that she had injected her too quickly or that the liquid had been injected too quickly and I asked, 'Was that it?' to which she (nurse) replied, 'Yes, the liquid spilled out,''' Alvarado said.

Celina was then properly vaccinated, with her granddaughter ensuring she actually got her jab by checking all the vaccine vials used up that day.

Luis Felipe Tarazona, Santander's Undersecretary of Health, blamed the incident on 'human error.'
