Advocacy group warns of deteriorating health conditions of two Palestinian prisoners

A group advocating Palestinian prisoners’ rights has expressed serious concern over the difficult health condition of two Palestinian inmates in an Israeli prison, warning that the pair’s conditions are deteriorating because of deliberate medical negligence.

In a statement on Sunday, the Prisoners and Ex-prisoners Affairs Authority further said that Israeli authorities persistently refused to provide sick prisoners Nidal Abu Aahour and Nahed al-Aqra with the necessary treatment as the pair are held in the Ramleh Prison Clinic in the occupied West Bank.

The authority, whose comments came in a press release and was cited by the Palestinian Information Center, also said 45-year-old Abu Aahour from Bethlehem suffers from kidney failure, a cancerous tumor in the kidneys, and breathing problems.

It added that the inmate, who receives additional oxygen round the clock, is also suffering from high blood pressure and cannot sleep except while sitting.

According to the statement, 52-year-old al-Aqra from the al-Amari refugee camp in Ramallah is suffering from multiple health conditions and is one of the least healthy inmates in the Ramleh Prison Clinic, where he is being held permanently.

The Palestinian prisoner was arrested with an amputated leg. After he was taken to an Israeli jail he received no proper treatment, deliberate negligence that led to infection with gangrene in his other leg.

He later underwent an operation to amputate his leg in Asaf Harofeh hospital. He is still suffering from severe pain in both his legs and all over his body, according to the statement, which added that the inmate just recently began suffering from lung problems.

According to the report, nearly 700 sick Palestinian prisoners are behind bars in Israeli jails, 300 of whom suffer from chronic diseases and in need of urgent treatment.

Dozens of those prisoners suffer from cancerous diseases of varying degrees, it added.

A Palestinian human rights group warns that many sick Palestinian inmates in Israeli jails are facing death due to deliberate medical neglect.

More than 7,000 Palestinian prisoners are currently being held in some 17 Israeli jails, with dozens of them serving multiple life sentences.

Over 500 detainees are under the so-called administrative detention in various Israeli prisons. Some prisoners have been held in that condition for up to 11 years without any charges.

The co-called Israeli administrative detention is a form of imprisonment without trial or charge that allows the Israeli authorities to incarcerate Palestinians for up to six months, which could be extended for an infinite number of times.

Palestinian detainees have continuously resorted to open-ended hunger strikes in an attempt to express their outrage at the detentions.
