A new poll of Conservative Party members has found widespread suspicion, prejudice and hostility towards Muslims.
The Poll by YouGov for HOPE not hate found that 57% of party members had a negative attitude towards Muslims, with 21% registering a very negative attitude.
47%, believe Islam is “a threat to the British way of life,” while 58% still believed that “there are no go areas in Britain where Sharia law dominates and non-Muslims cannot enter.” This figure rose to 66% when it came to individuals who voted for Boris Johnson in the 2019 leadership election.
The same poll was carried out nationally and Just under a third of the general public (30%) thought Islam was a threat to the British way of life. this reveals a significantly more negative attitude towards muslims in the conservative party than across the rest of the public.
While such findings are worrying, they’re nothing new. concerns over widespread islamophobia have been raised on numerous occasions, even during the 2019 leadership debate. The controversy over Boris Johnson’s remarks were widespread, but research has found that his approval rating increased following his statements, not to mention a rise in random attacks against muslim women.
During the debate all candidates pledged to have an independent inquiry into Islamophobia, but this was quickly shelved once Boris Johnson won his landslide victory in the general election.
Many will point to the role of the Media when it comes to widespread islamophobia, so while Brexit and the coronavirus take centre stage, muslims have found some respite, however with such prevailing hostility within the ruling conservative party, muslims up and down the country know that hate and negative coverage are never too far away.
