Daniil Medvedev beats Andrey Rublev 7-6, 6-3, 7-6 in all-Russian duel to reach the semifinals of the US open.
Unlike the tightly contested first set, the second was all Medvedev's. The third seed started raining down winners to take the set in just 31 minutes. Rublev made a valiant but ultimately futile effort to make inroads in the final set.
As he neared the finish line, Medvedev suddenly injected an element of surprise into the match to send his childhood friend home. Medvedev, seeking to return to the US Open final for a second consecutive year, looks to be in commanding form.
The 23-year-old Russian has not lost a set through five matches. In the semifinal, Medvedev faces the winner of contest between world number 2, Dominic Thiem and 21st seed Alex de Minaur.
Also in the US Open, Alexander Zverev of Germany has sealed a spot in the US Open semifinals, after cursing past Croatian Borna Coric 3 sets to 1. Coric threatened the German's hopes of a 1st Grand Slam Title with a ruthless performance in the opening set, as he managed to finish it 6-1.
The young Croat, then showed good resilience in the next two sets, but Zverev gradually reduced his errors, and took them both at 7-6.
The world number 7, upped his game and took the 4th 6-3, to wrap up the match after 3 and half hours. Zverev will meet Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta in the Last 4.
