Family of Chicago man killed by police seek body camera videos

Miguel Vega and his sons

The family members of a man who was killed by Chicago police after multiple gunshots have asked to check the body cameras of the police officers present at the scene.

Chicago police announced the death of Miguel Vega, 26, at a hospital on Monday night hours after they shot him in the back of his head.

The police claims that the shooting had begun after shots were fired at their car while responding to a call of a suspicious person in the city's Pilsen neighborhood.

Vega's brother, however, says his family don't believe Miguel has fired shots. He said his brother "was hanging out with people he grew up with” after work.

“We want to know what went down last night so we can fully understand and backup our stories or beliefs," Erik Vega said on Wednesday.

Vega's mother also said that she wants answer and justice for her son and wants to see body camera video.

“If my son was at fault, I’ll accept it, but it doesn’t make sense right now," Maria Vega told the Chicago Tribune.

This comes as the US cities have been the scene of violent protests against police brutality and racial injustice over the past months.

The supporters of Black Lives Matter movement came to the streets in May, when an African-American man, George Floyd, was choked to death by a white police officer in Minneapolis.

The Protests then spread to more cities in the US and across the world as US President Donald Trump threatened protesters near the White House with the use of “the most vicious dogs and most ominous weapons,” reverberating memories of suppressing the uprising of blacks across the country during the civil rights movement in the 1960s.
