The Italian capital Rome has been the scene of a sit-in protest to the recent normalization deal between the United Arab Emirates and Israel. The protest was attended by a number of local Palestinian associations.
Association of Rome organized a sit-in outside the United Arab Emirates' embassy in the Italian capital to make its voice heard against a deal by Abu Dhabi and Tel Aviv recently.
The deal, brokered by the US, aims to lead to a full normalization of relations between the two sides and has been perceived as betrayal of Palestinian’s struggle for their own land and their rights of self-determination.
The sit-in was joined by the Youth Palestinian Association, the Lazio region Palestinian association and Italian left leaning parties such as Power to the People and the Italian Communist Party.
At the sit-in, people are saying the normalization of ties between Arab countries and Israel is highly detrimental to Palestinians. They fear that such agreements would embolden Tel Aviv to push ahead with its occupation agenda and the aggression against the Palestinians.
Some protesters have hinted that the UAE-Israel deal is unequivocally directed at Iran. Protesters at the sit-in also denounced the US’ unwavering support for Israel.
