Iceland’s capital, Reykjavík, has canceled the traditional Menningarnótt, also known as the Culture Night festival as the number of coronavirus cases in the country is on the rise.

The festival has been held every August since 1996, attracting thousands of Icelanders and visitors from across the world.

Overall, there are about 100 active COVID-19 cases in Iceland at the moment and slightly less than a thousand people are currently placed under quarantine.

Iceland’s health authorities are now warning that the rate of infection for the respiratory disease in the country is fast approaching levels seen in Sweden and Denmark. This has prompted Norway to redlist Iceland as a high-risk area.

Icelandic authorities have taken more drastic measures to stem the spread of the contagion in the country. Those include placing a quarantine period of 4 to 5 days on arrivals to the Nordic island and requiring them to test for the virus both before and after isolation.
