Iran has issued an arrest warrant and asked Interpol for help in detaining US President Donald Trump and several other US military and political leaders who were behind a January drone attack assassinating Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani.

The top general, who was the former commander of the IRGC’s Quds Force, and his companions were killed in the attack near Baghdad International Airport.

Iranian prosecutors maintain that Tehran will continue to pursue Trump’s prosecution even after his presidency ends.

Prosecutors in Tehran say Trump, along with more than 30 others, was involved in the January 3 assassination attack accordingly face murder and terrorism charges.

Tehran has requested that a red notice be put out for Trump and the others, the highest-level notice issued by Interpol that seeks the location and arrest of the individuals named. Under a red notice, local authorities make the arrests on behalf of the country that requested it. The notices cannot force countries to arrest or extradite suspects, but can turn the spotlight on government leaders and limit suspects' travel.

Millions of people took to the streets nationwide for the funeral of General Soleimani and his companions as their bodies were passed through the crowds. At Tehran’s funeral procession, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei recited prayers over their caskets. General Soleimani was buried in his hometown of Kerman.
