World updates: Coronavirus infections top 8.77 million, deaths surpass 464K

The new coronavirus has so far infected at least 8,770,629 million people and claimed the lives of 464,038 across the world, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

The United States, the world’s number one hotspot for the disease, has so far reported 2,255,119 cases of infection and 119,719 related deaths.

Brazil, second only to the US, has recorded over one million cases of COVID-19 and almost 50,000 fatalities.

The following is the latest on the coronavirus pandemic from around the globe:

Brazil’s death toll nears 50,000

Brazil registered 1,022 deaths related to COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, the Brazilian Health Ministry said on Saturday, taking the overall death toll to 49,976.

A total of 1,032,913 cases have also been confirmed in the Latin American country.

​The total number of cases in the Latin American country is now 2,004,019, according to a Reuters tally.

Mexico reports 4,717 new cases, 387 deaths

Mexican health officials reported 4,717 new cases of positive COVID-19 and 387 related deaths.

The figures pushed the total numbers to 175,202 cases and 20,781 deaths.

The government, however, says that the true number of infected people is likely significantly higher than the confirmed cases.

South Korea reports 48 new cases

South Korea reported 48 new cases on Sunday, down by 19 from a day earlier, according to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC).

Of the new cases, 40 were locally transmitted infections and eight were imported, raising the total caseload to 12,421.

The total death toll remained unchanged at 280.

Australia extends state of emergency in Victoria

Australia’s second-most populous state, Victoria, reported a surge in the number of cases on Saturday. It reported 19 new infections on Sunday, the fifth day of double-digit rises.

That prompted authorities to extend the state of emergency in the state by four more weeks, starting Monday.

Victoria has now registered 1,836 total confirmed cases, or a quarter of all the cases in Australia.

China reports 26 new cases, mostly in capital

China, the first-ever hotspot of the new virus, reported 26 new cases for Saturday, down from 27 a day earlier.

Of the new cases, 22 were detected in the capital, Beijing, according to the National Health Commission.

No new deaths were reported in mainland China for the day.

To date, mainland China has confirmed 83,378 cases.

Indian PM urges Yoga, as caseload passes 400K mark

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged the world to practice yoga to contain the coronavirus pandemic, as his country crossed the grim milestone of 400,000 cases.

India reported an increase of 14,516 cases on Saturday, according to the Indian Health Ministry, which pushed the total to 410,4517, with 13,254 deaths.

Indonesia reports 862 new cases, 36 deaths

Indonesia reported 862 new cases and 36 more deaths on Sunday.

Health Ministry official Achmad Yurianto said those took the nation’s total number of cases to 45,891 and the fatalities to 2,465.

West Bank sees rise in new cases

The Palestinian Authority announced on Saturday that it was temporarily closing the cities of al-Khalil (Hebron) and Nablus in the occupied West Bank, after an increase in infections reported in the two cities.

“The government decided to close the governorate of Hebron to prevent anyone from entering or exiting, with the exception of the transport of merchandise,” said Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh.

Al-Khalil, which reported 48 new cases on Saturday, would be closed for five days.

Authoritative also reported 23 cases in Nablus, which will be closed for 48 hours.

The figures brought the total number of the cases in the West Bank to 687, with two deaths.

Spain drops 14-day quarantine requirement for Britons

Spain, one of the worst-hit countries in Europe, has now lifted quarantine requirements for British visitors.

Spanish Foreign Minister Arancha Gonzalez Laya said the country was “doing this out of the respect for the 400,000 British citizens who have a second residence in Spain.”

She said she hoped the UK government would likewise drop the quarantine requirement for Spanish citizens traveling to the kingdom.

Some 250,000 Spaniards have homes in the UK, she said.

Serbians go to polls wearing masks and gloves

People in Serbia have started casting ballots for a new parliament in Europe’s first national election since the pandemic hit the world.

The vote, which had been delayed once in April due to the outbreak, is now going ahead with masks and gloves made available at polling stations.

Serbia, which lifted tight lockdown measures in early May, is now reporting a rise in the number of infections. The country has so far reported 12,803 cases and 260 deaths.

Germany reports 687 new cases

In Europe, Germany reported some 687 new cases, bringing the total to 189,822, data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for infectious diseases showed on Sunday.

The institute also reported a death toll of 8,882. On Saturday, the figure had been 8,883. There was no explanation as to why the tally had decreased by one.

Russia reports fewer than 8,000 new cases

Russia on Saturday reported 7,728 cases of the new coronavirus, taking the overall tally to 584,680.

Russia’s national coronavirus response center said that 109 people had died in the past 24 hours, bringing the official death toll to 8,111.
