Residents a Greek town on Monday (November 25) watched their cars being swept away by floodwater and their homes being covered in mud as severe storms hit the country.

"Our lives' struggles have been destroyed, we don't have another house to stay," said Stamatis Kiochatzis, permanent resident of Kineta, a beach town west of Athens.

Extensive damage was recorded to the road network in the area from rock falls from surrounding hills and tones of mud.

Broken and uprooted trees blocked streets and landed on cars and houses as a result of a major forest fire in the region in 2018.

The storms hit western Greece over the weekend causing widespread flooding and disruption to transport.

Two people drowned when their moored sailing boat sank as torrential rain and thunderstorms lashed Greece, coastguard officials said on Monday.
