At least 21 students have drowned in the Nile in Sudan after their boat capsized, the country's state-run news agency has reported.

The boat had been taking them to school in al-Buhaira area. It appears one of the boat's engines stopped working, and the vessel then hit a tree and sank.

The news agency said more than 40 students were on board. Twenty-one drowned, along with a woman who was traveling on the boat on the way to visit her family.
