Iran men’s national water polo team has achieved its third successive win in the preliminary round of the 6th edition of the Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA) World Men's Water Polo Development Trophy in Malta, and advanced to the next level of the tournament.
The Iranian sportsmen, who had downed their Tunisian counterparts 10-8 in their second fixture the previous day, defeated the hosts 12-8 in their last Group A encounter in the central Maltese town of Gzira on Thursday evening.
The 6th edition of the FINA World Men's Water Polo Development Trophy opened on October 17, and will conclude on October 22, 2017.
The Islamic Republic of Iran had been drawn with Malta, Tunisia and Uruguay in Group A.
Australia, Peru, Saudi Arabia and Singapore were in Group B.
The Iranian team is scheduled to face Singapore in its next match on Friday.
The last edition of the FINA World Men's Water Polo Development Trophy, back in 2015, was held in the Iranian capital city of Tehran. Iran won the championship, while Uruguay took silver and Austria settled for bronze.
Uzbekistan won the 2013 edition of the Development Trophy in Kuwait City. Egypt and Saudi Arabia came second and third respectively.
