Iran first vice president says his brother detained

Iran’s First Vice President Es’haq Jahangiri

Iran’s First Vice President Es’haq Jahangiri says his brother has been detained but the official adds that he is not aware of the reasons behind the detention.

In a post on his Instagram account on Friday, Jahangiri said that he has no “precise information” about the reasons, the manner of his brother’s detention or the charges or accusations against him.

He emphasized that his brother had had no administrative role or responsibility and he will wait for the emergence of more details.

The senior vice president expressed hope that there had been no political motives behind his brother’s detention and that justice, the fight against corruption, and the rule of law would equally apply to everyone.

Es’haq Jahangiri has served as a deputy to President Hassan Rouhani since 2013, and ran as a candidate in Iran’s 12th presidential election in May but dropped out of the race to back the moderate president.
