Iran athletes lift own medal tally to 20 at World Para Athletics Championships

The 2017 World Para Athletics Championships have come to a close in the British capital city of London, with the Islamic Republic of Iran’s delegation landing in the 18th slot of the medal count table at the end of the international and highly prestigious multi-sport event.

Iranian athletes took home a total of 20 medals (three gold, twelve silver and five bronze). 

China ended on the top of the medal count table with 65 (30 gold, 17 silver, 18 bronze).

The United States was second with 59 medals (20 gold, 19 silver, 20 bronze), and Great Britain was third with a total of 39 medals (18 gold, 8 silver and 13 bronze).

Ukraine, Australia, Tunisia, Algeria, Germany, Brazil and South Africa finished in 4th to 10th places respectively. 

On Sunday, the 22-year-old Iranian sportsman Saman Pakbaz participated in the men’s discus throw F12 category competitions at Olympic Stadium in London, registering a throw of 50.07 meters to snatch the silver medal.

South African discus thrower Hermanus Blom stood atop the podium with a winning throw of 51.16 meters.

The bronze went to Spain’s Kim Lopez Gonzalez with a throw of 44.23 meters in his final attempt.

In the men's javelin throw F34 final, Iranian pitcher Mohsen Kaedi took the silver medal with her best effort of 34.88 meters.

Mauricio Valencia from Colombia struck the gold medal with a winning throw of 35.21 meters, and China’s Wang Yanzhang earned the bronze with 33.32 meters.

Iranian pitcher Hamed Amiri also pocketed the silver medal with 27.81 meters in the men’s javelin throw F54 division.

Manolis Stefanoudakis, a representative from Greece, won the gold medal with a throw of 29.51 meters, and Belarusian competitor Aliaksandr Tryputs got the bronze with 27.78 meters.

The 2017 World Para Athletics Championships started in in London on July 14, and concluded on July 23.

It was the 8th edition of the event, which was formerly known as the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics World Championship prior to 2017, and featured 213 medal events.
