Spaniards protest US missile strike on Syrian air base

People have held a demonstration in the Spanish capital, Madrid, to condemn Washington’s recent missile attack on a Syrian army air base that has drawn strong condemnations worldwide.

The protesters gathered outside the US embassy in central Madrid on Monday to denounce the April 7 US cruise missile strike against Shayrat Airfield in Syria’s Homs Province.

The demonstrators were holding banners and placards reading in Spanish, “No to the imperialist war. Stop the aggression against Syria,” “Have we forgotten about the refugees?” and “Why do governments not act?”

They were also chanting slogans against NATO and US military involvement in the Middle East.

Washington claimed that Shayrat Airfield had been used to conduct what it said was a chemical attack on the town of Khan Shaykhun in Syria’s Idlib Province on April 4. At least 87 people were killed in the town on that day.

The West held Damascus responsible for the purported gas attack, but Syria categorically denied the accusation and stressed that the casualties in Khan Shaykhun were caused when a conventional airstrike hit a depot where militants stored chemical weapons.

The Syria army emphasized that the US raid on its airbase violated all international laws and showed that Washington was an “accomplice” to the terrorist outfits active in the Arab country.

Tehran, Moscow and Damascus have called for an impartial investigation into the Khan Shaykhun incident.
