US Republican Senator Ted Cruz says the Ku Klux Klan white supremacist group was founded by members of the Democratic Party, criticizing the party's Senators for stalling President Donald Trump’s cabinet confirmations.
Speaking to Fox News on Wednesday, Cruz said Democrats have been "foaming at the mouth" since Trump defeated their nominee Hillary Clinton in the November 8 presidential face-off.
“The Klan was founded by great many Democrats and now the Democrats just accuse anyone they disagree with of being a racist,” he added.
“The Democrats are angry and they're out of their minds,” the Texas senator noted, adding that Democratic senators were “boycotting” the confirmation hearings in order to prolong the process.
“They're just foaming at the mouth practically. And really you know where their anger is directed, it's not at Republicans — their anger is directed at the American people," he added.
Democrats have been doing everything in their power to delay the confirmation process for most of Trump’s designated cabinet members.
Cruz’s statements came at around the same time that Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions, Trump’s controversial nominee for attorney general, won Senate’s confirmation by a close 52-47 vote.
The confirmation came after a series of divisive hearings, where Democrats targeted session’s civil rights record.
During the debates, Democratic senators like Elizabeth Warren accused Sessions of having intimidated black voters in the past and making comments that were sympathetic to KKK.
Cruz, however, denied all of the charges against Sessions and said he would “make an extraordinary AG.”
Meanwhile, KKK leader David Duke welcomed Sessions’ confirmation, saying his approval was a step towards “taking America back.”
The confirmation of other cabinet members like Steven Mnuchin to lead the Treasury, Tom Price to run Health and Human Services and Betsy DeVos to head the Education department also hit similar roadblocks.
“It is a disgrace that my full Cabinet is still not in place, the longest such delay in the history of our country. Obstruction by Democrats!” Trump said in a tweet on Tuesday.
