Junior Iranian boxers have won four bronze medals in the 2016 edition of the Agalarov Cup Youth Boxing Tournament in Azerbaijan.

Payman Shahpari, who had earlier made it to the semi-final in the 49-kilogram weight category, had to settle for a bronze medal after losing to a representative from the host nation on Saturday.

Ashkan Rezaei also lost to his Georgian opponent in the round of four and grabbed a bronze medal in the 52-kilogram class.

Ashkan Rashid and Amir Mohammad Nourshad scooped two more bronze medals for the Islamic Republic of Iran in the 64-kilogram and 91-kilogram sections, respectively.

“Given the fact that members of the Iranian team are moving from adolescence to adulthood, their performances in the contests were satisfactory. We hope the national boxers could broaden their skills and convert their bronzes to better medals in future international competitions,” said the manager of the national Iranian junior boxing team, Hossein Nohroudi.

On the first day of the contests, Iran’s captain Hossein Mousakhani refused to take on his Israeli opponent in the 60-kilogram category and was subsequently excluded from the rest of the tournament. Iran does not recognize the Israeli regime.

The 2016 edition of the Agalarov Cup Youth Boxing Tournament kicked off in Baku, Azerbaijan, on December 21, and will wrap up on December 26.

The sports event has attracted dozens of junior boxers from various world countries, including Azerbaijan, Georgia, Iran, and Kazakhstan.

The Islamic Republic of Iran Boxing Federation has dispatched a 7-strong delegation to the competitions.
