Dimitri Payet scored a late winner to help France salvage a 2-1 win over Romania in the opening match of Euro 2016 on Friday.

After both sides failed to break the deadlock in the first half, as France were put ahead in the latter thanks to a header from Olivier Giroud who converted a cross from the right flank to take a 1-nil lead for the hosts.

Romania leveled things up at the Stade de France from the penalty spot. Evra tripped Stanciu getting nowhere near the bouncing and the referee took his time before pointing to the spot before Bogdan Stancu converted in the 65th minute.

France were almost given a big blow in their opening match of the tournament until Payet came to the rescue with an irrepressible left foot drive that found the top corner of the goal as France struggled past Romania 2-1 in a group A encounter of Euro 2016.
