Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani says he will vote for US Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump in the April 19 Republican primary in New York state.

“I support Trump. I’m gonna vote for Trump,” Giuliani told the New York Post on Thursday.

Giuliani said he expects the New York billionaire businessman will get most of New York’s 95 delegates.

“It’s a question of how much he gets over 50 percent. If he wins 70 to 80 delegates, Donald has a good shot of securing the 1,237 delegates to secure the nomination before the convention,” Giuliani said.

Trump, who has never held elected office, is currently leading the race for the Republican presidential nomination, despite making controversial statements about several issues.

Last week, he expressed concern that the Republican Party might try to “steal” the nomination from him if he fails to win the 1,237 delegates necessary to clinch the nomination.

In September, Trump signed a pledge to support the eventual Republican nominee, but backed off that promise last week.

The real estate magnate has previously said that “so many people” would want him to run a third-party campaign if he does not secure the GOP nomination.

Observers say that Trump may finish about 80 delegates short of the absolute majority, meaning that the Republican National Convention in July will start without a presumptive nominee.

In that case, campaigns will jockey for advantage and either change or uphold the rules that have governed the primary up until that point. There might be several ballots. Most delegates are pledged to their respective candidates for the first ballot. After that, they can vote for other candidates.
