US man, woman killed in separate shootings

Indianapolis police responded to the McDonald's at 38th Street and Lafayette Saturday, April 2, 2016.

Two American people have been shot and killed in two different cities in the United States, officials say.

A man was shot and killed by a police officer at a McDonald’s restaurant in Indianapolis, Indiana on Saturday night.

Police received a call around 11:15 pm on a report of a robbery in progress and an officer arrived at the scene to find an armed suspect inside the restaurant.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), the suspect pointed his gun at the officer as the cop was walking toward him.

The officer then fired his gun, fatally shooting the man, the IMPD said, adding nobody else was hurt.

In another shooting incident in Leesburg, Loudoun County, Virginia, a woman was shot and killed on Saturday evening.

The Leesburg Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting that happened this evening in the Brandon neighborhood.

Officers arrived at a home for a report of shots fired and found a woman with multiple gunshot wounds.

34-year-old Christina Fisher was shot in the torso and was taken to a hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

“We believe this is an isolated incident and that there is no danger to the public,” said Leesburg Police Department spokesman Lt. Jeff Dubé.

Police provided no further details about the incident, but said they had a person of interest in custody.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has put the total number of domestic gun deaths at 1.5 million between 1968 and 2014.

According to the CDC, firearms are the cause of death for more than 33,000 people in the United States every year, a number that includes accidental discharge, murder and suicides.
