US Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and GOP candidate Donald Trump have won the presidential primaries in the US state of Mississippi.

On Tuesday, voters headed to the polls in the US states of Mississippi and Michigan, as part of the process to choose Republican and Democratic nominees for the 2016 presidential race.

As polls closed, Clinton was already expected to pull off a victory in Mississippi, which awards 36 delegates. She led Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders by more than 40 points ahead of the Tuesday primary.

On the GOP side, Mississippi has only 40 delegates and John Kasich was projected to have taken the second place, followed by Texas Senator Ted Cruz and further behind Florida Senator Marco Rubio.

With 13 percent of precincts reporting, Trump took an early lead in the industrial state with 37.6 percent of the vote, ahead of Kasich with 27.5 percent, while on the Democratic side Sanders had the narrowest of leads over Clinton, with 49.8 to 48.3 percent, according to US media.

In Michigan, Republicans were vying for 59 delegates while Democrats were competing for 130. In Mississippi, 36 delegates were up for grabs in the Democratic contest.

Early results suggested Trump was neck-and-neck with John Kasich in Michigan.

Republican voters also have their say Tuesday in a primary in Idaho and a caucus in Hawaii.

A total of 150 Republican delegates are at stake Tuesday compared to 166 on the Democratic side.

Clinton has wins in Louisiana, Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, Arkansas, Alabama and South Carolina, as well as Mississippi, and entered Tuesday leading Sanders by about 200 pledged delegates.

Heading into Tuesday’s contests, Trump led the Republican field with 384 delegates, followed by Cruz with 300, Marco Rubio with 151 and John Kasich with 37.
