Moroccan soccer player Adil Chihi has signed a contract with the professional Iranian Esteghlal Tehran Football Club, which plays in the Persian Gulf Pro League, also known as Iran Pro League (IPL).

The 28-year-old, who was born in the western city of Dusseldorf, will be playing for the Tehran-based club until the end of the season and for an undisclosed fee.

The contract signing ceremony was attended by Esteghlal Tehran’s Chairman Bahram Afsharzadeh, and member of the club’s board of directors Pendar Tofighi on Saturday afternoon. He was assigned the shirt number 23 by the club.

“It is an honor for me to play for Esteghlal as it is one of the most popular clubs in Iran and even in Asia. Esteghlal has a lot of fans and I will try my best to make them happy,” Chihi told reporters.

“I know Iranian players who played in Bundesliga like (Ashkan) Dejagah, (Ali) Karimi, (Vahid) Hashemian, (Mehdi) Mahdavikia and (Ali) Daei,” he added.

Chihi replaced Iraqi footballer Karrar Jassim Mohammed al-Mahmoudi, who left Esteghlal Tehran by mutual consent on November 29, 2015, following long-standing financial disputes with the club.

Chihi’s regular position is in right midfield, but he can play in forward if required.

On July 23, 2014, he joined English professional soccer club Fulham on a free transfer to play in the Football League Championship (often referred to as the Championship).
