President Barack Obama has criticized Republicans for their pessimistic rhetoric on the trail and describing everything in the US as “terrible.”
“Why is that Republican politicians are so down on America?” Obama asked when speaking at the Democratic National Committee's Women's Leadership Forum on Friday.
“I mean they are gloomy, they're like Grumpy Cat,” he said, imitating the Grumpy Cat frown, which is an image known to fans of the Internet meme that eventually spawned a product line and a Christmas movie.
Competition between Republican and Democratic candidates is getting fierce as they are trying to rally support among American voters who will cast their votes on November 8, 2016 to elect the next US president.
During his enthusiastic speech, Obama slammed the GOP candidates, while referenced the Democrats, but none by name.
He said that although “it's political season….,you listen to (the Republicans) and they've constructed this entire separate reality. It's like the Twilight Zone."
He threw his support behind Democratic candidates, saying "you've heard from some of our outstanding candidates."
"I'm going to be supporting ... whoever the nominee is," the president added.
Among Democratic candidates, Hillary Clinton still leads the Democratic presidential field, with 45 percent of the likely primary voters supporting her.
Donald Trump, another presidential hopeful, is holding a strong edge over the rest of the pack in the Republican field.
