At least 20 Taliban militants have been reportedly killed in US airstrikes and raids carried out by Afghan forces in the country’s Logar Province.

Logar’s Kharwar district police officials said on Tuesday that a number of Afghan villages were cleared of militants after the attacks.

Authorities said a large number of weapons and ammunition were also seized during the operation.

This comes a day after five people lost their lives in a roadside bomb blast blamed on the Taliban in the province of Faryab’s Andkhoy district.

Earlier this week, the Afghan Interior Ministry said government forces had managed to kill some 90 Taliban militants and injure 106 others in operations in the provinces of Daykundi, Ghazni, Kapisa, Logar, Maidan Wardak, Nangarhar, Uruzgan, and Zabul, and the city of Kandahar.

Afghan forces also say they have detained about two dozen others across the country in recent days.

The recent violence comes as Pakistan has recently said stalled peace negotiations between Kabul and the Taliban will most likely resume soon.

Afghanistan continues to face insecurity 14 years after the US and its allies invaded the country as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror. According to a report recently released by the Equality for Peace and Democracy (EDP), Afghanistan suffered a financial loss of over USD 9 billion last year alone in its fight against militancy.
