US political system has no existing independent voices: Analyst

The American political system is managed from the "top-down," with no existing independent and community voices, a geopolitical analyst in Europe says.

Barack Obama was elected as US president on the platform that he would be an independent voice, which turned out to be completely false, said Joaquin Flores, director of the Center for Syncretic Studies in Belgrade, Serbia.

“What appeared in 2007 in the Democratic Party as an independent voice in the form of Barack Obama of course quickly transformed into one of the recent political history’s biggest hoaxes, biggest scams,” Flores told Press TV on Monday.

“We can see this of course in the fact that Obama took into his staff most of the predominant neocons that had been actively involved in the [George W.] Bush administration,” he added.

The geopolitical analyst made the comments when asked about the recent criticism of the Obama administration made by US Republican presidential candidate and Florida Senator Marco Rubio.

In an article published on Monday, Rubio accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of trying to fuel more bloodshed in Syria by providing assistance to Damascus in its fight against Daesh (ISIL) terrorists.

Rubio claimed that Obama “can’t seem to understand Vladimir Putin’s goals.”

“In the absence of American leadership, Syria has become a playground for malign, anti-American forces such as ISIS [Daesh], al-Qaeda… and now Russia,” said the GOP senator.

“The situation will only get worse until the US provides leadership to counter the forces of extremism,” he added.

The US Defense Department is re-evaluating its Cold War era military plans following increasing tensions between Washington and Moscow over the conflicts in Ukraine and Syria, the Foreign Policy magazine reported Friday, citing current and former Pentagon officials.

This would signal a major departure from post-Cold War US military policy. The policy shift came after Russia’s reunification with Crimea last year and the conflict in Eastern Ukraine.
