Iran has dismissed as “groundless” recent remarks by the Bahraini interior minister, who accused the Islamic Republic of meddling in the kingdom’s affairs.
On Friday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham described Takfiri terrorism and the sectarian approaches adopted by certain parties as the real security threats facing the troubled region.
Afkham was reacting to the remarks by Bahraini Interior Minister Rashid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa, who accused Iran on July 23 of interfering in the Arab country’s domestic affairs and disrespecting the values of neighborly relations.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said the Islamic Republic has always acted responsibly and made efforts to strengthen regional peace and stability, urging Manama to work to deal with the root cause of the problems in Bahrain instead of playing a “blame game” and seeking to create an atmosphere of tension.
She added that the Bahraini authorities need to adopt “confidence-building” measures to set the stage for serious national dialogue aimed at putting an end to the political challenges that the Persian Gulf country is grappling with.
The Bahraini minister’s allegations against Iran come as the Manama regime has been under fire by many international rights institutions for its heavy-handed crackdown on peaceful anti-regime protests and political dissidents in the country.
Scores of people have been killed and many others placed behind bars by authorities in Manama since the beginning of a popular uprising in Bahrain in early 2011.
