Press TV has interviewed Joe Iosbaker, political commentator from Chicago, about the recent WikiLeaks revelations about the US spying on German officials.

Press TV: There seems to be the one NSA story that is not going away keeps reviving over and over, the spying on Merkel and her government. How do you feel about this latest report?

Iosbaker: Well, a question I thought when I heard this: How do you know when a spokesperson for the US government is lying? The answer is when their lips are moving. It was just last month that the French prime minister, French government called in the American ambassador to complain about WikiLeaks disclosing that the US had been spying on their French allies and the French demanded an end to eavesdropping and now it is Germany again. Remember that it was Ed Snowden had disclosed in 2013 that US had been spying, had in fact been listening in on Chancellor Merkel’s personal cell phone which started this controversy. Now it seems to be the Germans are even angrier. So spying on our closest allies, you know what else does the US do? Overthrowing governments simply because they won’t agree with control of their economy by US financial institutions, you know backing fascists in Ukraine, helping to fund ISIL in Syria, and then of course the denials that come following the exposure of these dishonorable things. Everything that the US says, the US government makes allegations that other governments like China or Russia are doing these things, but in fact it is the US that is the worst violator of diplomatic norms and international law in the world today.

Press TV: It is interesting, isn’t it that the allies that have been spied on such as Germany and France haven’t really gone after the US strongly as one would imagine they would, if it was an enemy state they would’ve been spying on them?

Iosbaker: Well, in fact the United States and its allies they have a common cause. Their common cause is to continue to prop up the system of imperialism that is extremely profitable. They conspire together. They work together to suck the blood out of the global south. You know they have a lot of common interests. We have to thank WikiLeaks for continuing to provide us with more and more of these exposures. Because there are conflicts between the US and its junior partners. Remember that it was maneuvering against the European Union’s influence in Ukraine that was in part the timing for the US to back the fascist coup in Ukraine in February 2014. Remember the famous statement by Gloria Nuland in which she cursed and said that the EU was going to be iced from influence in the Ukrainian government.
