Police continue to investigate a shooting incident during a basketball tournament outside an elementary school in Hartford, Connecticut that has left one man killed and three others injured.
According to reports, a 41-year-old man was shot in the head and pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital on Saturday afternoon. The other three victims sustained non-fatal injuries.
One of the injured, a 23-year-old man, was arrested as the main suspect. He seemed to have shot himself in the leg after targeting the other three.
It was not clear if the victims played for any of the participating teams or were just spectators.
Police announced that they were unaware of the games and no units were patrolling the crowded area at the time of shooting.
“Absolutely we would have given it extra attention throughout the day, if not have been here directly,” said a Hartford Police official.
Hartford Police has asked for any video footage that might help them identify the suspects.
"Anyone that might know anything, anyone that has cell phone video, anyone that has camera video of the event as most basketball tournaments are recorded, we would love them to come forward as soon as possible," the official added.
The city’s mayor called the shooting “absolutely unacceptable” in a neighborhood he described as “stable.”
“I am extremely upset given the number of people that were at this event, mixed ages, for the level of recklessness and violence that occurred here,” he said.
