A man has killed three people and left dozens of others injured after running his vehicle into a crowd in Austria’s southeast, a local official says.
The incident occurred on Saturday in Austria’s second largest city of Graz, leaving around 34 people wounded, governor Hermann Schuetzenhoefer said.
Ten people are seriously injured, Schuetzenhoefer said, adding that one of the casualties is in life-threatening condition.
The man was arrested after the deadly incident and police cordoned off the downtown area, the governor added, describing him as "mentally unbalanced."
According to witnesses, the vehicle was speeding at over 100 kilometers (60 miles) per hour when it hurtled onto Herrengasse, one of the main pedestrian shopping streets in Austria's second largest city, the local APA news agency reported.
According to witnesses, the man was driving an SUV (shown above) and plowed his vehicle into pedestrians.
Regional police chief Josef Klamminger ruled out the possibility of a terrorist motive.
APA quoted a police source as saying the driver showed symptoms of "psychosis."
President Heinz Fischer has expressed "deep shock" over the attack.
The incident comes after several people were killed and many more injured in a car explosion near a local fire station in the district of Torslanda in the Swedish city of Gothenburg.
The cause of the blast that occurred on January 12 was not immediately clear. At least four people were inside the car.
