Russia says Pyongyang has called off a scheduled visit by North Korean Leader Kim Jong-un to Moscow due to “domestic affairs.”

“He will not be present [in Moscow],” said Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin, on Thursday, adding, “We were informed of the decision via diplomatic channels. The decision is connected with North Korean domestic affairs.”

Peskov stated that it is not yet clear if the North Korean leader would recall the visit in the future, saying “there are no definite plans at the moment.”

He also rejected reports that the visit was cancelled after some countries warned Moscow of the consequences of Kim’s presence in the European country, saying, “This is certainly not the case.”

In March, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that Kim and 25 other world leaders would travel to Moscow on May 9 to take part in a ceremony honoring the 70th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.

A Russian presidential aide, Yury Ushakov, had said last week that Kim would also meet with President Putin during his stay in Moscow.

The visit would have been Kim’s first foreign trip since assuming power in December 2011.
