Plaid Cymru, as it is officially called, was founded in 1925 as an advocate for an independent Wales within the European Union. It took party several decades to win its first seat in the House Commons in 1966. By 2012, Plaid Cymru had 1 of 4 Welsh seats in the European Parliament, 3 of 40 Wales seats in the British parliament, 11 of 60 seats in the National Assembly for Wales, and 206 of 1,264 councilors. Plaid is a member of the European Free Alliance. The party has increased its vote base in Wales over the years from over 8% in 1979 to over 11% in 2010. During the last parliamentary tenure, the party had 3 of 40 seats in Wales.

 

Election promises:

• Additional year of education and childcare for 3-4 year olds

• Improve teacher training and cut red tape to give them more time to teach

• More support for university students of STEM subjects who remain in Wales to study
