At least seven people have died and three are feared dead in a plane crash after a small Argentine plane with ten people on board went down shortly after taking off from a resort area in neighboring Uruguay.

The small plane, which was carrying eight passengers and two crew members, crashed minutes after takeoff Thursday, authorities said.

The Argentine twin-engine Beechcraft C 90 King Air went down just after it had taken off from the Laguna Del Sauce airport, near Punta del Este city, east of Uruguay’s capital, Montevideo.

Nine people on board the Argentina-bound plane, including the pilot, co-pilot and seven of the passengers were Argentinean, while the other passenger was a Portuguese woman, authorities said.

The bodies of the victims have not yet been removed from the wreckage of the aircraft.

The cause of the crash was not determined immediately. However, Uruguay’s air traffic controllers and witnesses reportedly heard an explosion before the pilot’s attempts to land on water failed and the plane crashed into a lagoon near the airport.

In a similar incident last May, an Argentine plane crashed into a river in Uruguay, killing five people.
