BritainUK support for Saudi slammed

David Cameron and Prince Charles and images of flags flying at half mast over uk buildingsAs the British PM and heir to the throne pay their respects to the Saudi royals on the death of King Abdullah, questions are still being asked about the UK’s decision to grant one of the highest honour to a dead leader by lowing the flags on national buildings. The kingdom’s poor human rights record includes public floggings and beheadings.

The cosy nature of the relationship between Britain and Saudi Arabia has had always been known but the full extent of the rather ‘special relationship’ between Riyadh and London was laid bare for all to see following the death of King Abdullah and now the way in which the government chose to mark that occasion some critics say went too far.

The Department for Media, Culture and Sports – responsible for the decision says it was in line with protocol. But for rights group, Saudi Arabia’s record demands action, not acceptance. The UK now stands accused of abandoning the victims of Saudi rights abuses and putting profit before people.
